This picture was taken only about half an hour after yesterday’s, which sort of shows how fast the snow was melting. All gone now, of course. Today is bright and not so cold.

Spent a lot of yesterday watching TV – even sat right through Calendar Girls, which we’d seen before in Florida. Compelling stuff, obviously. Most of the time, though, I was watching rugby and got quite excited when Wales came back to beat England, totally unexpectedly. I watched it a day late, and Dot did well to keep the result from me. I’m trying hard to like England and was doing well until their exciting winger, Strettle, got injured after a brilliant run. I’m very worried that England will now revert to the boring forward-centred game they seem to think is so wonderful. I prefer brilliance to efficiency, which is why I wasn’t too distraught by Scotland’s loss to France, even though I’m very pro-Scotland.

This is Alderfen Broad, where we walked just over a week ago. But this last weekend was even more special: Amy’s third birthday.

We arrived at Caddington about noon, to be greeted by two delightful grandchildren. One of the great things about grandchildren is that they’re always so excited to see you. We shall make the most of this before it wears off. Already they seem quite grown up: Oliver a mature five and Amy an enthusiastic three. She got a giant doll’s house for her birthday from her parents, and we bought her a couple of dolls for it. Oliver also bought her a doll. Amy can’t get enough dolls. She also got a CD player; now both of them have one, which makes things quite noisy, as of course one can’t have it on without the other wanting theirs on.

In the evening we watched England lose to South Africa in the rugby world cup final, which wasn’t altogether surprising, but it was a much closer game than might have been anticipated. Added to Lewis Hamilton losing the world championship the following day, and it wasn’t a great British sporting weekend. Norwich and Spurs also lost.

Julia and Dave came over on the Sunday and we had a second party, with the cake making a reappearance, complete with candles. We left early to organise the evening’s Ambient Wonder event, which went surprisingly well, with about 20 people turning up and a variety of things to do.

Yesterday Dot reorganised the garage, and I cleared out my rooom, which was satisfying. Later I lost a chess game, which wasn’t. Today I have been through lots of old papers that have been lying in my room for a long time. Some interesting stuff and a lot of rubbish, now sorted.

Little bit of a hiatus there. When you get home after a holiday there’s so much to do – in this case, so much still to be done as well. On Monday it was my brother’s birthday, and we spent much of the evening round at their house. My other brother, meanwhile, has had to be taken into hospital for a while – but the prognosis is not too bad.

The car has been serviced, and I’ve been to Cromer and Halesworth on training missions. And most important of all, we’ve spent a day down at Caddington with D and V and the grandchildren. Unfortunately V has not been at all well – genuine flu, I think – but the others seem OK. Grandchildren growing up fast and delightfully.

Yesterday I could have gone to Lowestoft for a Christian Writers’ meeting, but in the end I settled for catching up with some work and watching bits of rugby on TV. Ireland threw away the championship by attempting to get another try at the end and allowing Italy to get one instead. As it turned out, kicking the ball into touch would have done it.

Nice evening with friends last night, and a good view of the Cow Tower while putting the education world to rights.

Sunny and quite warm weather during most of the week has now turned to very cold, with sleet.

The picture is of an ibis, taken at Tarpon Bay, Sanibel Island, home of Doc Ford in the Randy Wayne White thrillers. This particular bird, with three friends, was hanging around the bait bin, hoping someone would forget to put the lid back on.
